Dead Ringers 1 Illusion eBook Darlene Gardner Reviews

I received a complementary copy of this book for my review. This young adult serial, the first in nine, is a strong and compelling start. Jade Greene is 18 years old with a father in prison for robbery and a paranoid schizophrenic mother who is struggling with her disease. Jade is strongly influenced by horror films and talks and thinks like a teenager. She has normal anxiety over complicated relationships with family, girlfriends, and good looking guys. She also knows that she has been abducted but has no memory of the forty eight hours when she went missing. Flashbacks provide her with frightening glimpses. Everything is not as it seems in her small town.
I received a copy of this title in exchange for my review. Dead Ringers 1 Illusion is awesome! I read this in an evening as I could not put it down. It's written in serial format so it leaves you on a bit of cliffhanger. It has a little romance but doesn't focus too much on that yet. I love the mystery angle of it. The author has 3 of the stories out and planning on releasing 6 more. It focuses on teens in a beach town where most of the kids work at a carnival. Jade, the main character, has lost 48 hours in her life and has absolutely no memories of that time. She is starting to have flashbacks. She is not sure of who she can trust and as a reader, I'm right along with her. Only time will tell! I am downloading #2 & #3 and if they continue to be as good as the first one, I will be along for the ride for the remaining six.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to review.

I'll preface my review by stating that I think this book most suitable for young teens, not due to any sort of terrible content, but they would probably find it more enjoyable. I am far removed from my teens, and did like this enough to delve further into the series. Nothing earth shattering or mind blowing, but a fast read, that held my interest. If allowed for half stars, I'd probable have gone with 3.5, but went up for the four. I did find the main character a little tiresome, but chances are, I was tiresome as a teenager too. The other characters were interesting enough, as is the continuing story. Keep in mind, this is only the first in a series of stories. I believe, as of now, there are four available.

I've read all four, and would give the series, to date, a 3.5-4 rating.
Jade a slightly sarcastic, slightly snarky, and a whole like of a likeable character. Jade had gone missing and had no recollection of where she went, who took her, or what happened. Jade only has freaky flash backs and déjà-vu memories of a clown and a pointy syringe plunging into her. Most think she’s crazy or just full up it, especially the other teens around her, except for the local hottie, Max Harper. Max seems to believe her and even interested in more than her mysterious past, but he becomes slightly obsessed with the murder of a local wealthy woman. Suddenly, Jade is battling fierce flash back and warning signs that she’s in danger and it’s coming quickly. Bodies start showing up and the creepy carnival she works at might harvest more memories than Jade is ready to face.

This book is an easy read to get sucked into and I’m dying to read the next of this serial series. Jade is a totally likeable character. The mystery swirling around her is haunting and addictive. Pick up this short novel and be ready to wonder if your secret (or not so secret) fear or clowns has real meaning…
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone might not be out to get you.

Okay, Horror/romances are supposed to be basic, right? Ya got the good guys and the bad guys and especially the Bad Girl (named Adair, in this case), and they act pretty much according to type without a whole lot of nuances of character. Then there's the seeming Good Guy (Hunter, a real hunk) and the main character (Jade Greene) wants him to be her good guy, but Adair is going out with him. Then there's the Other Guy (who says his name is Max) who's probably bad, but he's really a hunk, too, so she doesn't know... And it all takes place in some small town on the coast somewhere with a carnival or boardwalk of some sort with a real scary fun house that might be real scary.

And if you accept that this pattern is going to happen and this doesn't bother you, there are a lot of fun reads out there in the horror/romance genre. "Illusion" is one of them. If you add to this plotline the fact that Jade has lost 48 hours of her life a few months ago and has dreams of a scary clown with a hypodermic, plus the fact that her mother is a paranoid schizophrenic, you have scope for a whole lot of tension.

I particularly like Jade, a semi-fan of horror movies, with the kind of self-deprecating humour that sends her into dark and lonely places, commenting to herself that when she watches a movie heroine doing this sort of thing she snorts with laughter at the stupidity. Then Jade goes in anyway.

Her willingness to put herself in scary situations creates a reasonable amount of tension, and working out her personal demons gives an added kick to the suspense.

Max is a refreshingly three-dimensional change from the rest of the cast breezy, mature and humorous, but with enough mystery to keep us guessing.

One thing you need to know. This is not a full novel. It's one 25,000-word volume of a 9-part series. So don't expect everything to wrap up tidily at the end. I didn't know this, and I was quite miffed, and fairly disappointed, when the book suddenly ended. Sounds like I was enjoying it. Guess I'll have to read the next one, too!

I was given an electronic copy of this book in order to write this review.
I wasn't' the target audience for this book but was interested in the supernatural angle. This book became a flat out cliff hanger, wasn't all that well fleshed out as a book, and left me feeling as if I had been duped.
Finally an author understands the value of providing a free taste of their skills. This story is good enough for me to want to read the rest of the series.
